Senior Manager of Construction
The Senior Manager of Construction will be responsible for effectively overseeing Fowler's entire construction division, including the planning, organizing and employee requirements for all of our construction projects. As part of a growing organization, this role plays an integral part on our Senior Leadership team and will work closely with other leaders to ensure smooth operations and maximize overall company profits.
Key Duties:
Operational:
- Responsible for the management of the entire construction department team including staffing, training, mentoring, employee retention, performance management, and succession planning.
- Regularly visit the field to support Project Manager and Superintendents on site. Focus on shadowing, training, relationship building, providing feedback and then also observing and monitoring production and efficiency.
- Conduct project closeout meetings with required Fowler team members from construction (and any other departments) to review project successes and challenges, and to capture any suggested improvements.
- Provide technical expertise to the construction team.
- Work closely with Director r of Business Development and Estimating to provide expertise on construction projects, bids, opportunities, and to ensure successful working relationships between both construction and estimating teams.
- Lead by example, fostering a culture of accountability, reliability, mutual respect, and efficiency.
- Foster positive relationships with employees, clients, stakeholders, and community members.
- Ensure schedules are being formulated, communicated, and respected on all job sites and within the construction division.
- Responsible for quality control plan development and maintenance on MTO projects.
- Oversee subcontractor contracts and assist in negotiating with subs and suppliers are required.
- Formulate capital equipment requests and assist with selection. Encourage innovation and explore use of new technologies.
- Oversee productions with Project Managers daily and weekly.
- Provide oversight and management of Resource Manager role.
- Ensure Health & Safety compliance of your team. Attending on-site tool talks, monitor and provide feedback on weekly site visits, reviewing all safety documentation from SiteDocs.
Financial:
- Monthly monitoring and preparation of business unit statements with WIPS and ACCRUALS, job cost reviews.
- Responsible to be a first and foremost company construction expert in dealing with internal and external construction sales / cost, including deficiencies, short payments, work in progress, disputed quantities and any issues on projects that would have a financial implication to the company.
- Lead managers in ensuring prompt billing and follow-up.
- Ensure project kick off and close out meetings and reporting occur in a timely manner.
- Responsible to ensure deficiencies and short payments are addressed quickly and efficiently and to hold staff accountable in this regard.
- Assists with collections of receivables on an as required basis.
- Provide direction and support in identifying, formulating, submitting and negotiating claims for changes or additions.
- Works closely with the Director of Business Development & Estimating to determine the costs associated with completing the scope of work in a tender.
- Accountable and responsible for the profit and loss of the business unit. Financial reporting to Senior Leadership team and board members on a monthly and quarterly basis.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Professional Civil Engineer or Civil Technology Certificate.
- 10 + years of progressive management experience leading and developing a company/division to success.
- Strong and proven construction business acumen. Extensive construction (heavy civil, highway, asphalt paving and site projects) experience, possess technical knowledge of operation sufficient to help with technical issues, and provides input on constructability.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, Book 7, OPSS etc.
- Excellent engineering and practical construction capabilities.
- Able to organize, coordinate and direct projects.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with people in and outside the Company, representing the Company to customers, the public, the government, and subcontractors’ representatives.
- Must be able to work under pressure and adapt to frequent change, delays and unexpected events.
- Solid analytical and technical skills.
- Able to use all related computer hardware and software.
- Maintain valid driver's license.
Work Conditions:
- Based out of our head office in Bracebridge, Ontario, and on-site as required (this position is not remote or hybrid).
- Travel to various sites may be required.
- Indoor and outdoor environments in various weather conditions.
- Weekend work may be required.
